Hello! This is the Doomed Show Episode 2: Next of Kin

Well, holy heck in a hand-basket! It seems to me that those crazy boys, Richard and Brad, have recorded another episode of the Doomed Show. Yikes, I don't think I should talk about myself in the 3rd person anymore. This episode is about the New Zealand/Australian horror flick Next of Kin. You can download the episode right here. Perfect Creature

If it wasn't for my wife I probably wouldn't have nearly as many vampire movies as I do. Like most horror fans, I ran into the minor roadblock of slowly destroying the sanity of my significant other one gorefest at a time. Somewhere along the line, I discovered my sweet lady's love for vampire flicks and we filled some shelf space with them. So when I heard about Perfect Creature, I knew I had to bring this one into the household.

One thing you can always count on in New Zealand horror films is an offbeat viewing experience. Their brains just don't work the same down there which is a very good thing. Writer/director Glenn Standring (The Irrefutable Truth About Demons) brings this freaky little steampunk gem to life. The film is very well made made and even though the plot isn't exactly rocket science, Perfect Creature is fiercely original in its delivery.

The special effects are cool, there's lots of blood, there's a cool vampire dude (played by Dougray Scott) and an angsty vampire dude (Leo Gregory) and a hot chick that gets caught in the middle (Saffron Burrows). There are also several moments where this film slips out of its 2006 release date and feels like some long forgotten 80s movie especially when things get weird. That's good stuff right there. Anyway, give this one a spin some time.

Saturday Night's Double Feature

I think I may have set some kind of precedent last night for totally fucked up double features. First, my wife, our friend Shelly (a frequent moviethon guest), and myself watched Big Man Japan which is easily one of the weirdest films I've ever seen. Part droll documentary, part giant kaiju movie, and completely surreal, Big Man Japan is a tough one to beat in terms of insanity. But then I followed it up with my totally uncut bootleg of Brain Dead (AKA Dead Alive), Peter Jackson's best film. Throw in some cheap but amazing Chinese food from China Star on Fowler Avenue, a lot of Mountain Dew and oh yes, you have a magical night.

New Zealand Horror Part 3

I'm so out of touch that I almost forgot that Alexis Arquette is now a woman. I was writing my review for Jack Be Nimble and I was all like "hey, I wonder what Alexis Arquette is up to these days" and then it hit me: my connection to pop culture is actually quite tenuous. If I didn't watch "The Soup" every Friday night then all would be lost. Anyway, here is my dang review of Jack Be Nimble.

I can't for the life of me remember when I first saw Kitchen Sink. But I do know that it freaked me the fuck out. I'm pretty sure that is the proper response. Anyway, I had no idea it was from New Zealand. Canadian born director Alison Maclean cold rocks the Lynchian freakiness with her black and white short film. And of course, sweet, sweet Youtube has the whole thing.

I've been doing some thinking about New Zealand horror lately. Those crazy Kiwis are always up to something bizarre, aren't they? Well, aren't they?
