What was the first DVD you ever bought?

When I finally broke down and got my first DVD player back in 2000, I bought two films:

I bought Princess Mononoke because I was and still am a huge Miyazaki fan. I bought Suicide Kings because it was $9.99 (and I paid too much). What was your first DVD(s)?

  1. Starship Troopers and the Criterion Hard Boiled. They were pretty special!

Mononoke is a great choice too.

  2. John Carpenter's "The Fog", but I thought it was defective (there's a story there), and I returned it for Hitchcock's "North By Northwest".

  3. Clue, to replace my countless recorded-from-TV VHS copies. I think it cost $35 dollars.

  4. @a hero - You ultra-violent mofo! Excellent.

@Dave S - I'd like to hear The Fog story if you have time.

@Jeffrey - You can't go wrong there even for that price.

  5. I bought my first DVD player around '96. I was really into Hong Kong flicks, then. I bought a bunch of Tai Seng discs (which I still have, btw.), like the Chinese Ghost story trilogy, bunch of John Woo/Tsui Hark/Ringo Lam flicks. The subtitles on the discs were infinitely better than the VHS.

  6. There were two: Office Space and Lock, Stock, Two Smoking Barrels.

Mononoke is a pretty good one to have as a first DVD buy, man.

  7. @Hans - Very cool. Tai Seng is one of my favorite companies of all time.

@Kev - If you could have only afforded one at the time, which would you have settled on?

  8. With me it was the four-disc edition of Fellowship of the Ring in November 2002. I wanted to give the machine a workout. After that I think it was the Director's Cut of Conan the Barbarian, but I think I'd rather have the theatrical version.

  9. My DVD Player was my big Christmas present for '98. I got two movies as presents: Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu. And with my Christmas money I bought As Good As It Gets.

Best story about that present, too. On Christmas, my family was gathered around the table for dinner. Grandpa turned to me and said "Tell everybody about that VD you got for Christmas!"

  10. Mine where Urban Legend, Wild Things and Supernova. I still have a soft spot for Urban Legend.

  11. Mine was The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I was so excited about all those special features! Now I have the Blu-ray, but I kept the DVD.

  12. @Samuel - You are beyond time, my friend. One of the ancients.

@Justin - There is a shot for that but nothing can cure Caligari Syndrome.

@Prof - That's because Urban Legend is fucking awesome.

    @Ryan - Don't dream it, Blu it.

  13. The first two DVD's I got were Resident Evil (had the final chapter missing) and House of 1000 Corpses - hated it at the time but in the context of more recent films it has grown on me. And soon afterwards I bought Hellraiser and Evil Dead
