Episode #23 - The Mario Bava Episode

As a spur of the moment type of thing, I asked Brad if we should do a Mario Bava episode for Hello! This is the Doomed Show. He said no. Just kidding, he actually said heck yeah. So we made a very long list of Bava movies that we had both seen and without any notes or anything, we just shooted the shat about those films for a couple hours. It was fun and we hope you like it. Please note: I am still getting used to Brad's new voice! He says that he has always had it but I just don't know.

  1. Man, I'm already behind and now another episode!? Not that I am complaining though! Just listened to the last one for a couple of minutes to check the new mic thing - bit of an echo, and new Brad sounds like old Brad on steroids - dig it!

Now I'm waiting for "The Jess Franco Episode"...just kidding, but I just had the very first Blu-ray of a Franco film in the mail today (Celestine - with Lina 'Zoomed In Queen' Romay and Howard 'Always Awesome' Vernon. A silly sex comedy, but I just had to get the world's first release of an original Uncle Jess in HD).

Btw, Senor Lobo, that book about Naschy is getting a new and expanded edition via Creepy Images, in case Brad wasn't aware of it.

Looking forward to listening to the most recent episodes,
    cheers,

  2. Absolutely fantastic.. Hello! This is the Doomed Show is basically the only podcast I listen to nowadays and that i can stay focused on through an entire episode.IMO you guys have set a new standard..the only thing better than a 2 hour Doomed show is a 3 or 4 hour one!! :-)

We can but dream of a future Luigi Cozzi episode..or even a Jean Rollin episode

    Best regards.. /R.Geiger

  3. Nice work yet again!

I must admit of the "Big Three" (Argento, Bava, Fulci), I am the least versed with Bava. I of course have seen his gialli, but still have not seen Kill Baby Kill, Lisa and the Devil, Planet of the Vampires, The Whip and the Body, or Black Sunday (even though I've owned that one for almost four years now) among the other movies you mentioned. I need to get on it, but I already have a huge backlog that requires visiting first. Once I get this Independent Study over and done with, I sense a giallothon of my own.

Of the Bava films I've seen, my favorite is Blood and Black Lace, purely for the aesthetic. It's not just the first giallo in color, but one of the best examples of how to use color in film period. If I could figure out how to replicate the scene in the antique shop, I'd be a millionaire.

And I'm still getting used to Brad's voice, too! In past podcasts it sounded somewhat...sleepier.

Anyhow, keep it up and rock it as always.

  4. Nice shows, guys!

I just had to order the Arrow UK Blu-ray of "A Bay of Blood" as I was listening even though I'm pretty broke right now, so thanks a lot...

But something had to be done, because to this day I only know two Bava films. A few years ago, when I had just begun to get a bit interested in Italian horror (via Romero's stuff to Fulci's "Zombi 2"), a non-profit genre cinema in Hamburg (appropiately called "B-Movie") ran a Bava/Argento retrospective and I saw "Crystal Plumage" and "Kill, Baby, Kill" in a double feature. I've been kicking myself ever since for not having seen more films during the run, but the poster for that retrospective with artwork from "Planet of The Vampires" has been on my wall ever since. Btw, in Germany, "Kill, Baby, Kill" has the ridiculuously cool but misleading title "The Dead Eyes of Dr. Dracula."
Shortly thereafter I got "Baron Blood" (and "Cat O' Nine Tails") on DVD, even though I hadn't really liked the films I saw at that double feature. Still, they got stuck in my brain and I had to watch more. Weird how these films work.

Your episode just got me more excited about the upcoming Blu-rays. It's gonna take a while to get them all since there are also a lot of Rollin titles I need to get, and a few upcoming Franco titles (!!), but I'm already looking forward to collect them all and give this show another listen then.

    Cheers,
    MLP
